Games?!
Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 2:24PM I used to be able to say that I don't like The Beatles; but someone set me straight once, saying "I tend to find there is at least one beatles song you like, you just never knew it was a Beatles song". Or something like that, my memory stinks. Still, the logic is sound.
Anyway,
I'm a HUGE Rock Band junkie so I'm definitely excited for this; but for those of you who don't play, or are just simply fans of the band, does this excite you? The game will allow you to relive their career, from Please Please Me to Abbey Road-think of it as a visual history lesson on one of the most influential bands in music history.
As a concept, it sounds fantastic, but I wonder how far will they go with it. Will it simply be a list of songs that you play in order until you "win"? (see Rock Band: AC/DC) Or will it be more? There is just so much potential here; off the bat I'm thinking it could be somewhat akin to a "virtual documentary". Guitar Hero:Aerosmith was close to what I'm thinking but had only a few interviews here and there, and came with only 40 songs (40 percent of which are not by the band itself, which is ridiculous.) So much more can be done with this game, and with this genre-we, as fans, just need to demand better.
The Beatles: Rock Band will most likely sell like hot cakes on the name alone, and Harmonix could have very well done the bare minimum with this because they knew this fact. But a part of me thinks that they realized what a golden opportunity they have on their hands here and deliver a game not just worthy of the name The Beatles, but also further innovate the rhythm game genre like they have in the past. A true interactive music experience not some "hardcore only" kick-you-in-the nuts pure game that practically demands you play it as much as you would a real guitar just to get anything out of it. (holy run on sentence, Batman!)
First and foremost, these games should be fun. It shouldn't be about how gnarly you shred duuuuuuuuuude. Fuck that. That's not why I play, and I'm sure that's not why the majority of the "mainstream" play either. Harmonix gets this, they always have; that's why even the pure cynic that is me has faith that they will deliver on this game.
What say you?
